I have a problem shopping at a store who would pay a police officer to intimidate customers. 6 year customer, now I think i’ll pass. Whole Foods is the next town over.

Earthfare is a marvelous store–a concept long overdue.
Thank you for such a wonderful nutrition resource.
I am concerned about consuming Canola Oil in your salads.
Please see this site that says Canola Oil is toxic to
human beings. Would appreciate your comment on this.

Thanks for your comment. We have had a serious shop lifting issue at one of our stores. It hurts the entire Earth Fare community when someone steals. We fully appreciate your concerns, however we do believe that this decision is in the best interest of the entire community. -Jack

Hi Ed-
Thanks for your comment. We think Canola Oil is healthy and there is a lot of misinformation out there. Below I have cut and paste our canola oil brochure.
-Jack
Fat Facts:
Canola Oil
At Earth Fare, we support the use of Canola Oil as part of
a healthy diet. Canola is a variety of the rape plant. Rape is
a relative of turnips, mustard and cabbage.
Rapeseed oil, like mustard seed oil, has been used in
cooking for thousands of years. As with many other oils,
rapeseed has also been used for practical purposes like
fueling oil lamps, making soaps and lubricating machinery.
Earth Fare uses Canola oil from Spectrum Naturals, one of
the most reputable brands in the natural foods industry.
Spectrum only uses non-GMO seeds for their oils and does
regular DNA testing to verify that their seeds are GMO free.
Spectrum oils are expeller-pressed, avoiding chemical
extraction methods commonly used in conventional oil
production. Spectrum oils are preservative free.
A lot of confusing information is out there on Canola Oil
and much of this information is incorrect. We at Earth Fare
want to weigh in on why we believe Canola oil is a perfectly
acceptable part of a healthy diet.

I totally agree with the placement of a police officer in the store. As a customer who does not steal and who feels stealing is wrong, I feel safer with a police officer monitoring the store. I think management made the right decision in protecting their store as well as their customers.

Brilliant Idea: Put the bloody wheels of cheese in a display case!
12 Hours a day, $10 an hour, 7 days a week: $3,360 per month to have an armed soldier in store.
I know many competent machinist and carpenters that would build you a beautiful custom case for one or two months of pay ($3360-$6720)
Or you could just keep leaving the expensive wheels of cheese out for the crack heads to steal (right in front of the police officer you’re paying $3000 a month to stop it, mind you)

I can’t name one other grocery store in Greensboro who has an armed guard.. Maybe they are exempt from the shoplifting problem?
To me, hiring a police officer is an intimidation tactic, basically telling me that you don’t trust me, the rest of your customers and employees as a whole, when 99% of us are trustworthy.
I just hope one of the trigger happy under-trained police officers you’ve hired doesn’t murder a customer they think might have an apple in their pocket. I mean that sincerely.

I am sorry that you have both chosen to denigrate the wonderful officers who do a great job in keeping all of us safe, not only in Greensboro but throughout the country, and also that you continue to promote your personal agenda through attacks on Earth Fare and on me.
My, and Earth Fare’s only intention is to provide a safe environment, not only with our food but also when a series of crimes are being committed. Our position is clear and we don’t have a belief that our customers are untrustworthy; actually it is quite the opposite.
I hope that we can move on to legitimate dialogue and skip the personal attacks, particularly on the police officers. – Jack

Jack,
I live and work in Boulder, Co, the mecca for N/O products, and i can say from experience the true customer isn’t effected by the show of security…in fact they should feel rather safe and not ever notice the issue. From experience again, i ran a major Grocery store across the street from CU student housing, and having off duty security never caused any issues with our loyal guests. Today the same location is now a Sprouts Farmer Market and during all the research they mgt didn’t even think about theft until i talked with them from a cautious approach.
So keep doing what you have to do,
Tom

Why the sudden change in tone? You sort of lost me there.
First of all, my ‘attacks’ on law enforcement were far from personal. I didn’t name specific officers, or agencies for that matter, making it impersonal at best. But while we are on the subject, it doesn’t sound like you know much of GPD’s history. It hasn’t been to stellar the past few years.. Corruption, racism, police negligence, violence against minorities.. As I said, I just hope they don’t murder an innocent customer, and I say that sincerely. It is a dark and sad reality.
And since when is speaking my mind against something I am passionate about and “voting with my dollars” considered “promoting my personal agenda”. Your last message came across as nothing but condescending. Earth Fare, I regret having to let you go.. You’re fired

Hahaha! Are people really stealing wheels of cheese? Do you know how much those things weigh? LOL I really don’t think that’s the problem. An old lady with a walker could stop someone trying to steal a wheel of cheese! I’m sure it probably has to do with the stores being robbed at gunpoint…I’m sure they lost more than a wheel of cheese that day. And what’s is matter anyway? It’s not about how well defended Earth Fare is, it’s about how great their food is…

I agree, do what you have to do.
I drive almost 60 miles to shop at Earth Fare in Columbia, S.C.. I have tried other stores, tried reading each and every label, tried educating the owners on what I want to buy. To no avail. Earth Fare is still the only store that is providing a product that I want to buy.
Not only do I get a quality product but the staff is super friendly and helpful and security is never a concern.
Can you bring a store to Sumter S.C. ? (not likely but I had to ask).

We stumbled across your new store while in Chattanooga, TN for a visit there and loved it! We’re from northeast MS and would love to have store like this in our area. One of the employees mentioned she thought you might opening one in MS, but couldn’t remember which town! I hope it’s Oxford! If we don’t get one, I noticed your opening in Huntsville, AL and we go over there fairly regular.
Thank you,
Terrie

I know this is an old post but I have to say I feel much better when there is security in a store! I live in a small town and the Kroger has had to hire off duty officers because people stealing. I think it is great to see a smaller company pay to protect their customers as well as their business!
